What if memory loss and confusion in older adults What if memory loss and confusion in older adults are not “just a part of ageing” — but early signs that deserve timely attention?

In my latest blog post, I write about dementia in the Indian context, why awareness and early action matter, and how physiotherapy can play an important role in maintaining mobility, independence, confidence, and quality of life for ageing individuals.

As India’s elderly population grows, conversations around healthy ageing and neurological well-being are becoming increasingly important. This article is an effort to simplify some of these ideas for patients, caregivers, and families.

I invite you to read the full post on my website and explore other articles where I share thoughts on public health, physiotherapy, and overall well-being.

Many people know me through my clinical work, but Many people know me through my clinical work, but over the last few years, another important part of my professional journey has been in the field of physiotherapy publishing.

As the Head of the Physiotherapy Publishing Division of CBS Publishers and Distributors, Delhi, I work on developing textbooks and academic resources for BPT and MPT students across India.

This work involves identifying the evolving needs of physiotherapy education, commissioning books with experienced and respected authors, coordinating with publishing, editorial and production teams, and ensuring that the final content aligns with the NCAHP curriculum and current academic expectations. In some projects, I have also contributed chapters wherever required.

Over the last four years, it has been fulfilling to see many of these books reach students, educators, and institutions across the country. This post shows a glimpse of a few of the titles from the CBS PhysioBrid Series, created through the collective efforts of dedicated authors, editors, reviewers, designers, and publishing professionals.

For me, this work is an extension of physiotherapy itself — contributing not only to patient care directly, but also to the learning journeys of future physiotherapists.

Back pain is something many people experience, oft Back pain is something many people experience, often as a result of daily habits and movements.

🏋️‍♂️ In this video, Dr Divya Gupta (PT) shares three simple precautions that can help reduce strain on your back:

❌ Avoid bending forward excessively — this can increase pressure on the intervertebral discs and may aggravate pain or even lead to conditions like sciatica.
❌ Avoid lifting heavy weights unnecessarily — something that is often done unknowingly in day-to-day activities. Awareness can make a big difference.
❌ Avoid jerky movements, especially while travelling, as they can trigger or worsen discomfort.

Small changes in how we move can go a long way in protecting our spine. If back pain continues despite these precautions, it is important to seek guidance from a qualified healthcare professional.

As we age, maintaining mobility, strength, and ind As we age, maintaining mobility, strength, and independence becomes increasingly important — and also more challenging.

Some common concerns among older adults include falls, muscle weakness, joint pain, and reduced mobility. Physiotherapy can play a great role in addressing these challenges effectively.

Clinical evidence consistently shows that physiotherapy is not just about recovery after injury — it is a proactive approach to healthy ageing. Structured interventions such as balance training, strengthening exercises, and guided rehabilitation can significantly improve physical function, reduce pain, and support independence in daily life.

Beyond the physical benefits, regular physiotherapy also contributes to confidence, mental well-being, and overall quality of life. The takeaway is simple — with the right guidance and consistency, ageing can be supported with strength, mobility, and dignity.

🏋️‍♂️ Workout injuries—ranging from lower back str 🏋️‍♂️ Workout injuries—ranging from lower back strains to shoulder impingement—affect millions of athletes annually, often stemming from improper technique, muscle imbalances, or excessive loading. Physiotherapy has emerged as an indispensable cornerstone of modern sports medicine, offering a multidimensional framework that bridges injury prevention, rehabilitation, and performance optimisation.

🏥 By utilising a phased approach that encompasses pain management, mobility restoration, and functional retraining, physiotherapy helps athletes achieve an 86% reduction in pain and can decrease the risk of reinjury by up to 50%. Whether it is through neuromuscular training for knee stability or eccentric strengthening for muscle strains, these evidence-based interventions ensure a safe and resilient return to peak performance.

If you are an athlete with a workout injury, consult a physiotherapist to know how specialised care can transform your recovery journey.

Shoulder pain is a common concern, whether it come Shoulder pain is a common concern, whether it comes from daily activities, work posture, sports, or overuse. In this video, Dr Divya Gupta (PT) shares three simple principles that can help in managing shoulder discomfort safely and effectively.

1 - Listen to your pain. Pain is the body’s way of signalling its limits. Avoid forcing movements beyond what your shoulder comfortably allows.
2 - Keep moving within your limits. Movement plays an important role in recovery. Completely stopping activity can sometimes make stiffness worse, so gentle, controlled movement within your pain threshold can be helpful.
3 - Use hot and cold therapy appropriately. Cold packs can help during acute or recent pain, while heat therapy may be useful for longer-standing or chronic discomfort.

Small, mindful steps can often make a meaningful difference. When shoulder pain persists or interferes with daily activities, consulting a physiotherapist can help identify the cause and guide a safe recovery.

This post is the first in a series I am calling - This post is the first in a series I am calling - "The role of Physiotherapy in uncommon conditions"
The first one is - Managing Marfan Syndrome: The Role of Tailored Physical Activity

Living with Marfan Syndrome doesn’t mean you have to stop moving—it means moving smarter! 🏃‍♂️✨

Marfan Syndrome is a genetic condition that weakens the body’s connective tissue, affecting the heart, eyes, and skeleton. While high-intensity sports can be risky for the heart, physiotherapy is a game-changer for staying active safely.

By focusing on low-to-moderate aerobic activities (like brisk walking or leisurely swimming), a tailored plan helps in:
✅ Strengthening muscles and stabilising joints.
✅ Improving heart health without overstraining the aorta.
✅ Reducing fatigue and boosting your mood.

Remember: The best exercise is the one that lets you keep a conversation going while you move! Always talk to your specialist before starting a new routine.

Wishing everyone a very **Happy Holi** 🌸🎨 Holi is Wishing everyone a very **Happy Holi** 🌸🎨

Holi is one of the most vibrant celebrations in our culture — a day that brings people together through colours, laughter, and shared moments of joy. It reminds us to pause from our routines, reconnect with others, and allow ourselves the space to simply have fun.

While festivals like Holi give us that opportunity once a year, the spirit behind it is worth carrying into everyday life. A sense of playfulness, relaxation, and enjoyment is not just a luxury — it is an important part of **overall well-being**. When we allow ourselves moments of joy and lightness, we support both our **mental and physical health**.

May this Holi bring you colour, balance, and renewed energy for the days ahead. Stay safe, stay active, and keep the spirit of joy alive beyond the festival.

On my socials, I wanted to share a few research ar On my socials, I wanted to share a few research articles that help patients and physiotherapists alike. The first among them is “The consensus statement published in Medicine & Science in Sports & Exercise on Exercise Guidelines for Cancer Survivors”.
The findings strongly reinforce that structured, appropriate exercise is not only safe for most cancer survivors, but it meaningfully improves fatigue, anxiety, physical functioning, and overall quality of life.
The report emphasises one powerful message: avoid inactivity. Even when full public health targets feel unachievable, carefully prescribed movement can still bring measurable benefit.
For patients requiring onco-rehabilitation, the approach always has to be individualised. Exercise is never generic. It is guided by the person’s diagnosis, treatment stage, side effects, physical capacity, and emotional readiness. The goal is to restore strength, mobility, endurance, and confidence — safely and progressively.
Evidence like this strengthens the case for integrating physiotherapy early in the cancer care journey. Timely intervention by a qualified physiotherapist can help prevent deconditioning, reduce complications, and support smoother recovery — improving both physical outcomes and overall well-being.

Every stage of life brings its own physical challe Every stage of life brings its own physical challenges — and physiotherapy adapts to meet those needs.

In my practice, I work with children through Pediatric Physiotherapy, support older adults with Geriatric Physiotherapy, and guide patients through Post-surgical Rehabilitation so they can safely regain strength and function. I also help individuals manage Lifestyle Disorders, recover from Sports Injuries, and navigate recovery journeys through Onco-rehabilitation and Neurophysiotherapy.

For those who are unable to visit in person, Tele-rehabilitation ensures that care, guidance, and structured recovery continue without interruption.

Across these areas, the focus remains consistent — careful assessment, personalised planning, and steady rehabilitation. It is encouraging to see patients regain mobility, confidence, and independence, and continue progressing toward healthier, more active lives.
